Women aged under 40 are not eligible to attend BreastScreen SA. If you do notice any new changes to your breasts, you should see your doctor as soon as possible.
Women under 40 are not eligible because:
- Screening mammography is not an effective screening test for women under the age of 40. Younger breast tissue can appear 'dense' or white on a screening mammogram, making it less effective at showing small cancers.
- While breast cancer can develop at any age, it is much less frequent in women under the age of 40. More than 75% of breast cancers occur in women aged over 50, and less than 8% occur in women under the age 40.
Family history of breast cancer
Less than 5% of breast cancers are due to a strong family history or genetic mutation. The risk of developing breast cancer will depend on a number of factors including:
- How many relatives have had breast cancer
- The age when breast cancer was found
- How closely you are related
- Genetic mutation risk
If you are concerned about your family history of breast cancer you should discuss this with your doctor.
You are welcome to attend BreastScreen SA once you turn 40.
