For the first time ever, BreastScreen SA has performed more than 100,000 mammograms in one year.

Forty-four year-old client Melissa Williams, had the milestone mammogram, while getting her first ever screen at Marion Clinic.

Ms Williams decided to have a scan after a friend recently had surgery to remove a lump from her breast.

"So that was playing on my mind," Ms Williams said.

"My eldest sister then sent me an infographic through Facebook that said that 1 in 7 women develop breast cancer before the age of 85."

"I clicked on it, and it took me straight to a booking portal and I asked myself, why wouldn’t I book right now? That was in the morning and by lunch time I was in here having a scan."

Speaking about her call from BreastScreen SA to say she had the 100,000th mammogram this year, Ms Williams said "I thought that is so great to hear, it is such a milestone that has been reached and women are being more proactive about their health. It’s such great news. Knowing it has never been reached before is fantastic."

BreastScreen SA provides free breast screens every 2 years to women over the age of 40 with the aim of diagnosing breast cancer at an early stage, before it can be felt.

There are 12 clinics, including eight fixed screening clinics, a pop-up clinic at Aldinga and three mobile screening units which visit more than 40 rural and remote locations every two years.

BreastScreen SA Program Director, Dr Lauren Civetta said the program is delighted to reach this incredible milestone.

"We would like to thank the women of South Australia for prioritising their health to help make this happen," Dr Civetta said.

"We would also like to thank our hard-working staff, including our staff in our clinics and all the staff behind the scenes who have helped make this possible."
