On Wednesday 2 April 2025, BreastScreen SA unveiled a new artwork used to create beautiful shawls to encourage Aboriginal women from the APY Lands to participate in breast cancer screening.
The painting 'Kurunpa Wiru' (Healthy Spirit) tells a story of supporting women's health in the APY Lands, encouraging women to have an ipi check (breast screen) to look after themselves and live a long life.
The artwork, by proud Yankunytjatjara woman Sandra Pumani, has been used to create beautiful shawls that will be gifted to every Aboriginal woman who screens when BreastScreen SA visits Marla in August this year.
Sandra Pumani said she is very proud of the artwork, and of the work BreastScreen SA do in keeping women safe.
"I want all First Nations people, especially our women and children to live a happy and healthy life." Ms Pumani said after officially unveiling the artwork.
BreastScreen SA Program Director Dr Lauren Civetta thanked Sandra for the beautiful painting, which will be displayed at BreastScreen SA.
"BreastScreen SA are dedicated to improving the health outcomes for Aboriginal women by reducing the barriers to screening through education programs, promotional activities, and group screenings, which are all tailored to the needs and preferences of the women attending for their breast screen." Dr Civetta said.
BreastScreen SA is visiting Marla from 9 to 14 August 2025. Contact us to find out more about our beautiful shawls.
