Breast cancer

Know the facts and risks

What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer is an abnormal growth of cells in the breast. The cancer may grow into surrounding tissues and spread to other organs of the body. Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting Australian women.

What are the symptoms of breast cancer?

You can have breast cancer without having any signs or symptoms. This is why breast screening every 2 years from the age of 40 is important. Learn more about symptoms of breast cancer here.

Does a family history of breast cancer mean I’ll get it too?

Having a family history of breast cancer does not mean you will develop breast cancer. It is important for all women to screen regularly, be breast aware, and understand the risk factors for breast cancer.

I have small breasts. Does this mean I’m less likely to develop breast cancer?

All women are at risk of developing breast cancer. There is no connection between breast size and cancer risk.

I have injured my breasts. Does this mean I’m more likely to develop breast cancer?

Research has shown that a bump or knock to the breast does not increase your risk of developing breast cancer. However, it can draw attention to an existing lump in the breast.

Do men get breast cancer?

A small number of men are also diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia each year. Men who notice changes in their breast tissue should see their doctor.

Does wearing underwire bras cause breast cancer?

Research does not support the claim that underwire or tight-fitting bras increase a person’s risk of breast cancer.

Does wearing deodorant cause breast cancer?

There is not enough evidence to suggest that using antiperspirants or deodorants can increase your risk of developing breast cancer. We ask you to remove deodorant during your breast screen as it may show up on the x-ray image.

Does compression of the breasts cause cancer?

Compression is used to get a clear image and minimise the radiation dose during a breast screen. There is no evidence that compression causes breast cancer.
