My name is Sima, I was born in Afghanistan and I worked as a school principal, sharing my passion for education and supporting students. In 2018, I found a lump in my breast and my breast became very painful. I went to see a doctor and after being sent for tests, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I travelled to Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital in Pakistan for treatment and because my breast cancer was diagnosed early, my treatment was successful.
I am a healthy woman and I was surprised to find out that I had breast cancer. In Afghanistan there is no formal screening program for breast cancer, there is breast screening, but there is no recall system for women aged 40 -74 every two years. So when I noticed a symptom, I went to the GP for further tests. This decision saved my life.
My message to all women is that we can learn about the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and pay attention to any changes that may occur with our breasts. If you notice any changes or are worried about a problem, go to see your GP for a check-up. If you are aged over 40, all women can book a screening appointment at BreastScreen SA and this screening test is free and undertaken by female radiographers. The staff are caring and the service will organise a female interpreter to support you at your appointment. The risk for breast cancer is higher for women between the ages of 50 – 74, so if you are in this age group should go for your screening every two years.
If you are unsure, I want to say that good health is the greatest gift, you can give yourself and your family. As mothers, sisters, aunts and daughters, our families depend on us to be the “light” of the family. When the light is shining bright, family life is easier, smoother and happier. I am the mother of 4 children and I now have 8 grandchildren including newborn twins. My days are busy, I am cancer free and I am enjoying every day, studying, seeing friends and supporting my family and grandchildren. I know that being healthy is the greatest gift you can give yourself and your family.
