BreastScreen SA's Assessment Clinic

Around 5% of women screened will be asked to come back to BreastScreen SA’s free Assessment Clinic for further tests. This does not mean that you have breast cancer, but sometimes more tests are needed to make sure.

This happens more often for women having their first breast screen, as there are no previous mammogram images to compare with. Something that might look unusual on your first mammogram might be completely normal for you.

We understand this can be a very anxious experience and our specialised team of health professionals will ensure you feel supported during your visit.

What happens at the assessment clinic?

When you arrive at the assessment clinic, our staff will explain what will happen and answer any questions.

You need to read and sign a consent form before we do any tests.

Then a team, including our specialist radiologists, will do some tests on the area that needs investigating.

What tests are done?

These are some of the tests you may have:

  • Breast x-rays – more detailed mammography.
  • Breast ultrasound – this test uses sound waves to check breast tissue.
  • Biopsy – a needle is used to take a small sample of cells and/or tissue from the part of the breast that needs to be checked.

How long will the tests take?

Assessments usually take 2-4 hours. Please allow for half a day when considering your parking or transport for the day.

Remember:

  • You can bring a support person with you.
  • Bring your doctor’s contact details.
  • Wear a 2-piece outfit (such as a shirt and pants), you will be given a robe to wear.
  • Do not use talcum powder, deodorant, or creams on the day of your assessment.

When will I get my assessment results?

In most cases, we can give you your assessment results on the day of your appointment. We will also post your results to you and send them to your doctor.

If you have a biopsy, you will be recalled to our Assessment Clinic at a later date to receive your results. If you had to travel for your assessment appointment, we can provide your results via a telehealth appointment if preferred.

In this instance, results are not provided on the same day because the sample of cells/tissue taken during your biopsy needs to be sent for laboratory analysis by a pathologist. The pathologist will provide your results back to BreastScreen SA.

Most women who have further tests are reassured they do not have breast cancer. They are then reinvited for their next breast screen when it is due.

What happens if I have breast cancer?

A small number of women – about 6 out of 1,000 – who have a breast screen will be diagnosed with breast cancer.

If you’re diagnosed with breast cancer, our staff will explain the next steps, and where to get the information and support you need. We will also let your doctor know.
